Your choice of a new heating system is likely to depend on great variety of factors: the weather in your region, the size of your house, its insulation, and last but not least on your budget. The newer technologies have made the latest heating systems much more efficient that the ones that were used even two decades ago, but it is often less costly to simply repair your already existing heating system or even convert it to different and cheaper fuel system when that is possible. When calculating the costs, it is always wise to take into account not only the installation and other immediate costs, but the long-term expenses as well. In cities and states where long and cold winters are the norm, it is often cheaper in the long run to invest in higher-end and more expensive heating system, which is likely to considerably bring down the monthly bills. You can get a free contractor quote here as well.

You will inevitably need a new heating system if the old one has broken components that cannot be repaired or the repair is cost prohibitive; also, if the system is really old and with very low energy efficiency, then replacing it with a new one is likely to pay for itself in the course of just a few short years. In order to save money on such a large and costly project, you will have to familiarize yourself with the different heating systems and the different types of fuel that they use. Natural gas, electricity and fuel oil are the three most commonly used heating fuel types and if you live in colder climate, choosing gas or even fuel oil is going to be far less costly than electricity.

Another important step is choosing the heating system type – you might want to opt in for all-in-one solution that heats your house during the winter and cools it in the hot summer days. Most houses have central heating systems with central warm air furnace systems and hot water systems being the most popular, followed by heat pumps heating systems. From the stand-alone systems the built-in electric units, room heaters and wall, floor and pipeless furnace are the most common.

The least expensive option when replacing an old heating system is to replace it with system of the same type since this will probably allow you to use some of the existing piping or ductwork and actually replace only some and not all of the parts. Since installing a new heating system is something that most people would hire a contractor for, you should take the time to find the best men for the job – ask your friends, family, and coworkers for their experiences and recommendations. Then, call a few contractors and let them give you their estimates and carefully evaluate each bid. Check the contractors’ license, their experience, and ask about the given warranties; always ask for written description of the project before the work begins and make sure that the costs are not only broken down, but provisions for variables and contingencies are also made.

Your home cannot function properly without a working furnace. The furnace is primarily used for the heating of the home making it imperative during the winter months. If your furnace has stopped working or you are moving to a new home that does not have a furnace or has a poor furnace then it is important that you purchase a new furnace.

Everyone has a budget for newly purchased items even if it is something that they need and not want. It is important to budget shop so that you can find the best-priced furnace but you also have to determine the overall cost of a new furnace. How can you save money if you need to? How do you get the best value for your money? New furnaces can range from about $3,000 to $5,000 and up, but you can save a lot if you find the right quote. You can compare furnace estimates here (it’s free and there’s no commitment).

When purchasing a new furnace, you will want to take a look at the efficiency rate of the furnace. Most of the newer models go all the way up to 97% with the lowest required by the EPA is 78%. If you don’t want to get the top of the line with the 95% efficiency, you can actually save a little money, probably about 10% or so depending on your location and the store, by purchasing a new furnace with 90% efficiency.

Those with higher efficiency rates will in the long-term cost less to operate so you’ll save more money in the end, but it will also be more expensive than lesser efficiency. You will want to compare your household usage and the size of your home to determine the best size efficiency rate of your new furnace.

In addition, don’t get a furnace that is too large for your home as the cost of a new furnace will only rise – and for no reason. Get a furnace that will heat your entire home efficiently; otherwise, you’ll pay more for the furnace when you initially purchase as well as after you purchase it due to the higher costs of it operating.

Another cost associated with the cost of a new furnace is the installation. It must be installed by a licensed HVAC contractor. If you know someone that has their HVAC license and will do it for free or even a small fee then you can save a lot of money – hundreds, possibly even a thousand dollars – by not having to pay full labor price to a contractor that you don’t know. If you must go with a licensed HVAC contractor that you are unfamiliar with, check out their reputation and get bids from several contractors so you can choose the best value for your money.

Keep in mind that while the cost of a new furnace may be a huge cost right now, it won’t be required again for years to come. The higher quality level of furnace you buy now the longer it will last; however, you also want to stay within your budget. Above all else, keep it properly maintained and perform maintenance when needed so that the furnace will last even longer for you and your family.

Cheap Home Heating Oil

Heating oil is a method of heating used by millions of people across the country. Oil heat has a lot of advantages, its efficient and is a better overall source of heat than forced air. In the last few years however, oil prices have fluctuated like crazy leaving many people trying to find the best source of cheap home heating oil that they can. So what exactly can you do to save money on heating oil?

Well first of all as winter approaches the price of heating oil will climb. This is simple supply and demand at work, with more people looking to fuel up the price rises. So one of the best ways to reduce the price you pay is to fill up in the off season, typically the summer. You also want to make sure you know exactly how much heating oil you will use through the winter as you don’t want to run out and pay more in the winter.

If you live in a remote area of the country (or the world) you can expect to pay more for home heating oil as well. About half of the price of heating oil can be attributed to the cost of distribution such as the trucks and tankers that bring the oil to buyers. If it’s harder for them to bring it to you they are going to charge you more of course. If you were hoping to live in the mountains and still have cheap home heating oil you are sadly mistaken. If moving to an easier location for distribution is an option you may want to consider it.

Another way to find cheap home heating oil is to play the competition against each other. Assuming you live in an area where there is more than one distributor of home heating oil then you should shop around and see if you can negotiate a lower price by threatening to go to their competition. This wont save you a huge discount, but it may save you a few bucks which can really add up if you fill your tank a few times throughout the winter.

Many companies offer a budget plan for heating oil which will help insulate you from spikes in the cost of crude oil. What this entails is you agreeing to a price in advance, which is typically higher than the current price. The advantage for you is that if prices spike upward like they did during Katrina a few years ago you will be locked in to that price and the heating oil company will take a loss. This can be a big savings if prices jump, but on the flip side you may pay more if prices drop. There is certainly something to be said about stability in pricing though.

Bottom line heating oil can be a great source of heat, but you are very much beholden to your distributor as to how much you will spend. Shop around, try to lock in a price and buy off-season. This is the best way to buy cheap home heating oil and will save you a lot of money over time.
